• Maintain satisfactory standards of care relating to national and local guidelines as appropriate.
• Report to on matters relating to patient care to the Clinical Manager and Medical Staff as appropriate.
• Carry out specific treatments prescribed by Medical Staff.
• Observe the “Standard Procedures” for safe handling, administration, storage and custody of medicinal products in the health service as agreed for PDS and to liase with the Pharmacist in matters relating to the above procedures.
• Maintain effective communication with patients and their relatives as appropriate, other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team and other relevant establishment departments.
• Display awareness of current developments in nursing and medical practice and seek opportunities to further knowledge and professional skills.
• Comply with all PDS central and local healthcare, security and Health and Safety policies and procedures.
• Participate in healthcare and nursing research under the direction of the Clinical Manager, or the Medical Officer, as appropriate, and within the policy framework of the Healthcare Services Policy and Procedures.
• Promote an environment in which nursing staff from other disciplines are given the opportunity to develop their clinical and managerial skills.
• Take charge regularly of the Health Centre, Ward area etc.
• Assist in the maintenance of the Health Centre/Ward area equipment and fabric and maintain the stores and supplies at adequate levels with regard to efficiency in the use of resources. Participate in field trials as necessary.
• Support newly recruited staff and participate in the orientation/induction process. Supervise as appropriate.
• Focus specialist skills to direct patient care and act as a resource to colleagues under the direction of the Clinical Manager and Medical Officer as appropriate.
• Accompany patients within and outwith the establishment in accordance with assessed clinical need
• Provide emergency cover as appropriate to both detainees and staff.
• Provide support and counseling to detainees to help alleviate fears/anxieties.
Essential skills
• To act as “First on the scene” nurse, attending any area in the centre, assessing physical/mental problems and initiating appropriate action
• To perform comprehensive assessments both physical and mental on all Detainees as required, and initiate appropriate action, based on good clinical practice and within PDS protocols, policies and procedures
• To comply with shift responsibilities as assigned
• To stand in for the Senior Nurse as required
